Tiger In the Tunnel
Ruskin Bond
Tembu, a 12-year-old Indian boy, lives in a tribal community on the fringes of a wild rainforest with his mother, father, and younger sister. He spends each night in a makeshift house close to a tunnel carved out of the rock. Tembu's father Baldeo keeps watch at a neighbouring train way station. A tiger unexpectedly charges into the space before the tunnel just as the train is about to arrive, heading directly for Baldeo. When the tiger charges, he jumps to the side and slams his axe into the animal's shoulder. By the time he realises that the train was closing in on him, he has little chance of escaping. He is shocked to find a sizable chunk of the tiger's body, nearly chopped in half by the engine, wedged just above the cow-catcher of his car.
